Applications for the STAR Rebate are schedule to be mailed from the Department of Tax & Finance to residents of Wayne County on August 27.

The Town of Walworth Assessor will be available to residents that need help filing their STAR Rebate application online.

Please make sure you bring the Rebate Program Application, you received in the mail. I will need the code off this application.  I will also need social security numbers, as filed on your income tax return, and your correct mailing address.

The following are a few of the more common exemptions. There are additional exemptions, please contact the Assessment office for exemption information.

• The Basic STAR exemption (RP-425) is available for owner-occupied, primary residences REGARDLESS OF AGE OR INCOME.

• The Enhanced STAR exemption (RP-425) is available for owner-occupied, primary residences of people age 65 and older with yearly household incomes not exceeding the statewide standard ($70,650). The age requirement is as of December 31, 2008. Therefore if your date of birth is after the March 1, 2008 filing deadline, you can apply for the Enhanced STAR before the March 1, 2008 deadline.

• The Senior Citizens’ exemption (RP-467) is available to seniors, 65 or older that meet ownership, occupancy and income requirements. The sliding-scale income ranges from $0 - $32,399.99. The exemptions are granted in 5% increments based on verified income. Income is to be reported on the basis of the latest preceding income tax year prior to the date of application (2007). If a Federal or State income tax return(s) was filed for any of the owners for the preceding year, copies of such return(s) must be submitted with the application.

• The “Alternative” Veteran’s exemption (RP-458-a) provides a property tax exemption of 15% (maximum of 12,000) of the assessed value to veterans who served during wartime and an additional 10% (maximum of $8,000) to those who served in a combat zone. There is additional exemption to disabled veterans equal to one-half of their service-connected disability ratings (maximum of 40,000).

• The Clergy exemption (RP-460) provides an exemption from real property tax to the extend of $1,500 for real property owned by a member of the clergy or the unmarried surviving spouse of such member of the clergy meeting the qualifications.

• The Persons with Disabilities & Limited Incomes exemption (RP-459-c) gives local governments and public school districts the option of granting a reduction in the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities must have documented evidence of their disability and meet income limitations and requirements.

• The Agricultural Assessment (RP-305) & Agricultural & Horticultural Buildings & Structures (RP-483) exemption - see application for requirements.

THE FILING DEADLINE FOR ALL EXEMPTIONS IS MARCH 1 OF THE YEAR THAT YOU ARE FILING FOR.
