SUPERVISOR’S REPORT - December

Winter is here!  Watch out for snowplows and for people who must walk in the road.  If a town plow accidentally hits your mailbox please let highway superintendent Mike Frederes or me know.  Our highway guys do a tremendous job keeping the roads open but occasionally the snow may be so heavy that the plow accidentally takes out a mailbox.  The highway department will try to get another mailbox up as soon as possible but this may be a while depending on the amount of snow that needs to be cleared.  The town is under no obligation to replace the mailboxes but our highway superintendents have always felt it was the right thing to do.  Please try to shovel the snow away from any fire hydrants near your home.  I know this is not easy, especially after a big snowstorm, but it is much easier to do it after the snowfall than when the fire trucks are trying to hook up to a hydrant because they need the water to put out a fire.
The Town budget is done and the tax rate for next year is staying the same as this year.  No increase.  One person asked why a few towns have lower tax rates than Walworth.  Walworth’s tax rate is one of the lowest in Wayne County. The towns with the lower rates have industry or business that pay a lot of property tax.  Ginna Power Plant in Ontario pays over 1/3 of all the Ontario town taxes.   Macedon has Wal-Mart, Lowes and all the other businesses along route 31 that pay a large share of the town taxes.  Walworth doesn’t have any of these large businesses so all the tax money that is needed to provide the services that are needed in every town, (plowing and rebuilding roads, library, animal control, town offices, court system and many others) has to come from the home owner.  The department heads worked hard to cut their budgets and the town board spent numerous evenings in work sessions to keep the rate even.
We have numerous people in Walworth who raise and sell Christmas trees.  Please consider purchasing your tree locally.  Also, you can buy a 2010 calendar from the Friends of the Park for your friends and family.  Your purchase will benefit the Friends of the Park and the calendars will make a great Christmas gift.  They can be purchased at the town hall for $10.00.
The Town Master Plan committee will start meeting in January.  They will meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday nights for 2 or 3 months.  Anyone interested in serving on this committee please contact me at the town hall at 986-1400 or by email at supervisor@townofwalworthny.gov
We will be having our regular “sit with the supervisor”  on Saturday January 9th at West Walworth Fire Hall at 9:00am;  Saturday February  6th at Lincoln Fire Hall;  Saturday March 6th  at the Gananda Senior Apartments “The Gardens”  and at the Walworth Hardware Saturday April 3rd .  Please stop by at any one of these locations to discuss any town issue.
Thank you to all the Town employees who have played an important part in the running of our Town over the past year.  Also,   thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who have spent many, many hours in service to better our quality of living.
I wish you all the best of the season
and a happy, healthy New Year.
