The Assessment Department regularly mails inventory update questionnaires in an effort to give the property owner the opportunity to provide the most up to date information to the Assessor regarding their property. If there have been changes made to the property or the condition of the property has changed, this is one opportunity for the property owner to make the Assessor aware of the change. Generally, the Assessor reviews the exterior of the property from the right of way. However, if the property owner wishes to schedule an interior inspection of the property they simply need to call the Assessment Office and schedule an appointment.
The following are a few of the more common exemptions. There are
additional exemptions, please contact the Assessment office for
exemption information.
• The Basic STAR exemption (RP-425) is available for
owner-occupied, primary residences REGARDLESS OF AGE OR INCOME.
• The Enhanced STAR exemption (RP-425) is available for
owner-occupied, primary residences of people age 65 and older with
yearly household incomes not exceeding the statewide standard
($74,700.00). The age requirement is as of December 31, 2010. Therefore if
your date of birth is after the March 1, 2010 filing deadline, you can
apply for the Enhanced STAR before the March 1, 2010 deadline.
• The Senior Citizens’ exemption (RP-467) is
available to
seniors, 65 or older that meet ownership, occupancy and income
requirements. The sliding-scale income ranges from $0 - $32,399.99. The
exemptions are granted in 5% increments based on verified income.
Income is to be reported on the basis of the latest preceding income
tax year prior to the date of application (2009). If a Federal or State
income tax return(s) was filed for any of the owners for the preceding
year, copies of such return(s) must be submitted with the application.
• The “Alternative” Veteran’s
exemption
(RP-458-a) provides a property tax exemption of 15% (maximum of 12,000)
of the assessed value to veterans who served during wartime and an
additional 10% (maximum of $8,000) to those who served in a combat
zone. There is additional exemption to disabled veterans equal to
one-half of their service-connected disability ratings (maximum of
40,000).
• The Clergy exemption (RP-460) provides an exemption from
real
property tax to the extend of $1,500 for real property owned by a
member of the clergy or the unmarried surviving spouse of such member
of the clergy meeting the qualifications.
• The Persons with Disabilities & Limited Incomes
exemption
(RP-459-c) gives local governments and public school districts the
option of granting a reduction in the amount of property taxes paid by
qualifying persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities must
have documented evidence of their disability and meet income
limitations and requirements.
• The Agricultural Assessment (RP-305) & Agricultural
&
Horticultural Buildings & Structures (RP-483) exemption - see
application for requirements.
THE
FILING DEADLINE FOR ALL EXEMPTIONS IS MARCH 1 OF THE YEAR THAT YOU ARE
